The Legal Protection Unit for Journalists at Press House - Palestine has initiated the contingency plan to monitor and document violations against media freedoms during the current escalation on the Gaza Strip.

The Legal Protection Unit issues a daily newsletter in both Arabic and English about violations against media freedoms in the Gaza Strip, the legal counselors at the unit within the safety measures for journalists have organized field visits to media institutions offices which targeted by Israeli occupation, and also, they conducted interviews with journalists and media institutions affected during the escalation, in order to document the violations committed against them.

From his part Mr. Abduallah Sharshara (Coordinator of Legal Protection Unit for Journalists) at Press House – Palestine, the journalists considered civilians and must be protected according to the International Humanitarian Law, he also mentioned that the Security Council had taken Resolution No. (2222/2015) in its session. Held on May 27, 2015, which affirmed its resolutions (1265/1999), (1296/2000), (1674/2006) and (1894/2009) regarding the protection of civilians in armed conflict, and the resolution (1738/2006) regarding the protection of journalists and workers in media in armed conflict.

He pointed out that the decision included condemning all abuses and violations committed against journalists in armed conflicts, and considering journalists, media employees who carry out their duties according to their profession in armed conflicts areas, as civilians and must be respected and protected.
