Press House holds a dialogue session on the topic of “Imprisonment Penalty in Publishing Cases”

On Sunday, August 08, 2021, Press House - Palestine (BAS) held a dialogue session on the topic of “Imprisonment Penalty in Publishing Cases from International Standards for Media Freedom Perspective”, as part of “Journalists Have Power” project activities, in partnership with the French Consulate in Jerusalem.

The session was held in Gaza City, with high prevention measures to prevent the outbreak of COVID 19, with the participation of lawyer Mr. Mohammad Abu Hashim and in presence of a number of journalists (women & men), students and graduates of media colleges.

The session opened by Lawyer Mr. Abdullah Sharsharh, Coordinator of Legal Protection Unit for Journalists at Press House, mentioned that Palestinian printing, publishing Laws and penalties did not match the minimum international standards for media freedoms. And this led Press House to hold this session because of the importance of this topic in light of Palestine commitments towards media agreements which involved in.

The session managed by lawyer Mr. Mohammad Al Jaesh, from the Legal Protection Unit for Journalists at Press House, stressing that this session presented the best practices according to international standards in order to protect publishing rights of journalists (women & men).

Also, this session presented limitations, controls which imposed on journalists when publish any media materials in order to protect the rights of others without affecting on journalistic work freedom.

From his part, lawyer Mr. Mohammad Abu Hashim talked about the experiences of countries in stop penalties which prevent the freedom of journalistic work, stressed that there is a need to committed national laws with the international standards to be suitable with legislation.
