“Young Journalists” Team Organizes an Open Media Day in Press House

Gaza, 19/02/2017--- Young Journalists Team organized on Sunday an open day at the headquarter of the organization to  talk about the reality of media colleges of the Gaza Strip universities and the methods of addressing the international media.

The media day was opened with a session called “ The Reality of Media in the Gaza Strip”, in the presence of Wael Mana’ma, lecturer in the Islamic University of Gaza- Rola Eleyan, lecturer in Palestine University, and  Wael Abdel Aal, the Head of Journalism& Media in the Applied College for Applied Science.

Wael Al-Mana’ma stated that Media Department was established in 1992, that the media department was the first of its kind in Palestine, explaining that  the reason of establishing it is to show the real image of the world and to detect the occupation’s violations.

Al-Mana’ma said that the foreign News agencies were the sources of news in Palestine, as they  were the control of news.

Al-Mana’ma confirmed that the university ensured the necessity of establishing Journalism department that teaches a Palestinian media staff to represent the issues of their nation.

Al-Mana’ma explained that the practical training was included in 1995, where the Voice of University was issued. That time the students started to create the news themselves.

In her turn, the lecturer Rola Eleyan said that the university presents the basics of work, afterwards they have got to build their skills and capacities to contribute to achieving success.

Eleyan asked to develop the curriculums and the capacities of lecturers in order to create a successful media generation, where she confirmed that the successful journalist has to be biased away from the factionalized tends for an effective objective media.

In his turn, Dr.Wael Al-Manama described the reality of media in the Gaza Strip as difficult and miserable, confirming that the media organization must be well-built to positively reflect the level of graduates and media level.

Abel Aal stated that some restrictions must be set against media student selection, where the department has to select people that are able to work in media.

He also asked all the heads of media colleges to create a complete media environment including developing the equipment, media curriculum, academic staff, and getting journalists involved in media department for more successful media.

The second session called “ Methods of Addressing International Media”, included Saud Abu Ramadan, Head of Ink Company for Media Services, Khalil Abu Hamra, the photographer of Associated Press in Gaza, Nour Al-Harazeen, Correspondent for Foreign Agencies in Gaza.

Suad Abu Ramadan talked about the differences of traditional and modern media, and the steps of keeping pace till it has reached this level that helps positively disseminate the media content.

Abu Ramadan noted that the hard work is required to build the skills of the youth, where university is not the only holder of the responsibility of preparing distinctive possibilities.

He also ensured that media students and graduates must hold second languages along with the Arabic, which in advance increases job opportunities for them including working with foreign agencies.

In his turn, the photographer Khalil Al-Haya said that the academic aspect is also important, but it needs practical skills to build the capacities of graduates.

He noted that his journey in photography started from focusing on the expressive photos that deliver clear and meaningful messages, noting that the foreign agencies accurately look for a photograph that meets their requirements.

He added that journalists must be full-prepared within the development of media, as the foreign agencies always need a photographer, a writer, and an editor.

In her turn, the journalist Nour Al-Harazeen stated that her success lies on the hard work, repetitive reports and various experiences that have built their capacities meeting the requirements of the foreign agencies.

She explained that the media mission is so big that causes big responsibilities towards the society, nation and outlet, noting that the western world is different from the Palestinian on several things including preparing the media material, terms and kind of view.

Nour stressed on the importance of success stories regarding the media staff who works for the local and international agencies as they have big roles in enhancing the situation of the issue presented by journalists.
