Gaza - Press House
On Wednesday, April 13, 2022, Press House - Palestine (BAS) held a legal awareness workshop on the topic of "Best Practices for Media to deal with Issues of People with Disabilities", as part of the Legal Protection for Palestinian Journalists Project Activities, which implemented in partnership with the European Endowment for Democracy.
The workshop was held at Press House in Gaza City, with participation of Mr. Abdullah Sharsharh, Coordinator at the Legal Protection Unit for Journalists, Mr. Mohammed Al Jaish, Legal Advisor and Mr. Zareef Al Ghurra, Head of Disabilities Representative Bodies Network, in presence of a number of journalists (women and men), students and graduates of media colleges in the Gaza Strip.
Mr. Abdullah Sharsharh opened the workshop and welcomed the attendees, mentioning that Press House works on enhancing the legal protection for journalists by building their legal capacities and raising their awareness about media issues as a human rights perspective.
Mr. Mohammed Al Jaish, mentioned that when the media deals with issues of people with disabilities, media institutions and journalists must choose appropriate terminology according to the Palestinian law and international agreements, and adaptation of public places for people with disabilities and prohibiting discrimination on the basis of Disability, the principle of equal opportunities on an equal basis with others and the public services responsiveness to needs of people with disabilities.
Mr. Zaref Al Ghurra reviewed the rights of people with disabilities, the legitimacy of their rights to equal opportunities with others in all fields, as media sector and respecting the rights of people with disabilities is one of the basic criteria by which countries' commitment to human rights standards is measured.
The awareness workshop included a number of participations from the participants, which focused on highlighting the issues of persons with disabilities in media.
