On Tuesday, August 10, 2021, Media Center at An Najah National University, in collaboration with Press House – Palestine (BAS), held a dialogue session on the topic of “Impact of Using Hate Speech on Media Freedoms in Palestine”, as part of “Strengthening Free & Independent Media in Palestine” project activities, funded by the Norwegian and the Swiss Governments.

The session was held in Nablus city, with high prevention measures to prevent the outbreak of Covid-19, with the participation of Ms. Woroud Yasen, Programs Manager at Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution and in presence of a number of journalists (women & men), students and graduates of media colleges in the West Bank.

The dialogue session was opened by Ms. Manal Al Zoubi, stressing the importance of focusing on hate speech concept and raising awareness between journalists (women & men) on media freedoms in Palestine.

Ms. Woroud Yasen, presented hate speech concept and how to differentiate between racial discrimination, hatred and freedom of expression, also she discussed the impact of using hate speech on media freedoms in Palestine.

In addition, she explained the root causes of hate speech in Palestine in light of big spread for media and social platforms, the importance of working on educating citizens, studying the results of using hate speech on community and media work and how hatred can affect directly on media freedom and transparency.

The dialogue session included a number of participations from participants which focused on how to cooperate seriously to put an end to use the hate speech and what are the practical procedures that should be taken for positive change.
