Press House - Gaza
On Wednesday, September 30, Press House – Palestine (BAS), in collaboration with Media Center at An-Najah National University in Nablus, held a workshop on the topic of “Freedom Expression and Hate Speech”, as part of Strengthening Free & Independent Media in Palestine Project activities.
The workshop was held in presence of a group of journalists (from both sex) and representatives of Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution (PCDCR) from Nablus.
The speakers of the workshop Mr. Alaa Nazal, director of North Office of the Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR), Mr. Alaa Nazal spoke about freedom of opinion and expression, reaching out to both theoretical and practical parties to the laws of freedoms in Palestine, where Mr. Nazal reviewed the legal framework for freedoms, down to some repressive practices and incitement to hatred and how they affect freedom of opinion.
Form her part, Wroud Yassen, who attended as representative of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution(PCDCR), commented that there is a big problem of clarity of standards and limits of freedom of expression in Palestine.
The participants attributed the restriction of freedoms to several factors, the most important of which were the existence of the occupation, in addition to the disruption of the legislative council and the control of the judicial and executive authority, and the division played the greatest role in restricting freedom of expression, while participants shared their stories and problems on the sidelines of freedom of expression.
The workshop concluded with recommendations indicating the need for active action to apply the laws properly without any abuse of laws to create an appropriate environment for expression in Palestine that takes into account the fundamental rights of individua
