Universities professors discuss with Press House the reality of legal awareness in universities curriculums for media colleges students

On Thursday, July 15, 2021, Press House - Palestine held a round table discussion on the topic of "Legal Awareness in Universities Curriculums for Media Colleges Students”, within "Journalists Have Power" project activities, in partnership with the French Consulate General in Jerusalem.

With high prevention measures to prevent the outbreak of Covid-19, the round table was held in Gaza city, with the participation of Dr. Ghassan Harb, Head of Journalism Department at Media College at Al Aqsa University, a number of media college professors and Laweyer Abdallah Sharsharh, Coordinator of Legal Protection Unit at Press House.

From his part, Dr. Ghassan Harb stressed the importance of having legal courses talking about local and international law related to media freedoms and contribute to graduating students to labor market and knowing journalism and publication laws.

From his part, Lawyer Abdullah Sharsharh mentioned that the goal of this round table is to create a discussion with a group of media colleges professors at Al Aqsa University in order to enhance the commitment of Palestinian universities in educational and awareness approach on local laws and international standards of media freedoms and freedom of expression.

Mr. Sharsharh presented four points to be discussed as, reality of universities curriculum in media colleges from part of media freedoms awareness and laws related to journalism, what legal awareness is required, what courses should be available in universities curriculums of media colleges, the academic method used in legal awareness?, Is it possible to depend on what civil community organizations offer as an alternative to academic curriculum? and what are Positives and negatives of adopting a new curriculum related to media freedoms and law in media colleges in Palestine?

The round table discussions have many participations and recommendations, focused on its important to have legal awareness courses teaching and knowing students their rights and duties and create legal guide related to journalistic work.
