Gaza - Press House
On Wednesday, July 14, 2021, Press House - Palestine (BAS) held a dialogue session on the topic of "Digital Blackmailing in Palestinian Law" as part of "Journalists Have Power" project activities, in partnership with the Government of Canada.
The dialogue session was held in Gaza City, with consideration of high prevention measures to prevent the outbreak of COVID 19, in participation of journalist Ms. Yosra Al Khairi and Mr. Abdallah Sharsharh, Coordinator of Legal Protection Unit for Journalists at Press House and in presence of a number of Journalists (women and men), students and graduates of media colleges.
From his part, Mr. Abdullah Sharsharah pointed out that usually journalists (women) are the most targeted for blackmailing and digital threats, according to many factors as, nature of journalism work, spread of investigative journalism on a large scale and the tense political situation in Palestinian area.
From her part, journalist Ms. Yosra Al Khairi mentioned that digital blackmailing is a crime punishable by law, it takes many methods and forms as threatening journalists (women) by hacking their mobiles or their accounts on social media websites.
Also, Ms. Al Khairi talked that journalists (women)who are exposed to digital blackmailing have to provide complaints to specialist authorities and not to accept dealing with blackmailer criminal at any case.
The session included many participations from participants, which focused on ways of avoiding digital blackmailing and legal basics of dealing with these cases.
