Gaza – Press House
On Sunday, April 11, 2021, Press House – Palestine (BAS) organized two legal awareness workshops on the topic of “Rumors and mechanisms of verifying news and information sources in the Palestinian Law” as part of “Strengthening Free & Independent Media in Palestine” project activities funded by the Norwegian and the Swiss Governments.
With consideration of high prevention measures to prevent the outbreak of COVID19, the awareness workshops were held at Press House for a number of journalists (women and men) and media graduates.
Mr. Mohammed Al-Jeish and Mr. Monther Al- Farany, lawyers and facilitators of the workshops reviewed a number of aspects which briefed the characteristics of rumors and the consequences of its spreading on the Palestinian community.
Also, the two workshops touched on the journalist’s legal responsibility according to the national laws and legislations in Palestine.
The two lawyers explained the legal standards journalists should follow to avoid any legal accountability in case they are accused of spreading rumors by verifying objectivity and accuracy in collecting and documenting information without exaggerating the news.
The awareness workshops included many participations from journalists (women and men); most of them focused on the legal consequences of spreading rumors and how to avoid the legal accountability while preparing the journalistic materials.
