Press House organizes 7 training days on the Legal Protection Manual for Journalists

Gaza – Press House

Press House – Palestine (BAS) organized seven training days on “Legal Protection Manual for Journalists” to raise the legal awareness level for journalists (woman and men) as part of “Strengthening Free & Independent Media in Palestine” project activities funded by the Norwegian and the Swiss Governments.

With consideration of high prevention measures to prevent the outbreak of COVID19, the training days were held at Press House targeting a number of journalists and volunteers (women and men) working at media institutions .

During these training days, the lawyers of the Legal protection Unit for Journalists reviewed the Legal Protection Manual for Journalists issued by Press House. The manual includes the most important violations facing journalists during their work, such as recording and photography issues and focusing on their rights in front of law enforcement. Also, the lawyers talked about the available legal protection for journalists during the armed conflicts, the procedures of documenting violations on the media freedoms, legal restrictions on preparing journalistic materials, the right to respond, and maintaining the confidentiality of the sources.

It's noteworthy that the Legal Protection Manual for Journalists issued by Press House aims to raise the legal awareness level for journalists (woman and men) theoretically and practically by providing them with legal knowledge in the Palestinian law and the international standards related to media freedoms in addition to facilitate legal procedures for journalists when they are exposed to any kind of violations. This manual targets media professionals in their different job positions.

Moreover, the selection of the legal manual topics was based on the analysis conducted by the Legal Protection Unit focusing on the most prominent problems the Palestinian journalists have faced from 2017to 2020 in addition to the journalists’ legal advice requests at the Legal Unit from 2020 to 2021.
