On Monday, February 8, 2021, Press House – Palestine (BAS) organized a dialogue session on the topic of “Importance of Protection & Legal Awareness for Journalists” as part of “Journalists Have Power” project activities funded by the Government of Canada.

With consideration of high preventive measures to prevent the outbreak of COVID19, Mr. Abdullah Sharshra, coordinator of the Legal Protection Unit for journalists at Press House, Mr. Yousif Karsoo, the legal consultant, a group of journalists (women and men), and media graduates participated in the dialogue session.

Mr. Abdullah Sharshra said “the unit provides legal counselling to the Palestinian journalists,” noting that Press House recently established the Legal Protection Unit to increase journalists’ awareness on their rights and duties. He added that the unit can carry out many legal interventions for journalists (women and men) to support and defend them in the case of exposure to arrest in addition to the unit’s work in monitoring all the violation against the Palestinian journalists.

From his part, Mr. Yousif Karsoo emphasized on keeping journalists’ privacy and confidentiality through providing them with the legal advice.

The dialogue session included many participations from journalists (women and men); most of them focused on the necessity of legal awareness for journalists to avoid legal accountability and the importance of holding legal awareness workshops and courses for journalists and media graduates to be aware of the journalistic work in Palestine.
