Press House concludes a training course on the topic of "Legal Awareness for Journalists in Gaza Strip"

On Thursday, November 19, 2020, Press House – Palestine(BAS) concluded a training course on the topic of  "Legal Awareness for Journalists in Gaza Strip" for 15 participants of journalists working in media organizations in the Gaza Strip.

The course lasted for four days, with consideration of high preventive measures to prevent the outbreak of Coronavirus, the facilitators of the training course was Ms. Samia Al-Ghussin ‎(lawyer)‎, as a part of Journalists Have a Power project funded by Canadian Government.

Ms. Al-Ghussain addressed the topics of media freedoms in international human rights law, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Political and Civil Rights, and the implications of media freedoms in international law.

Ms. Al-Ghussain explained the ethical principles and editorial standards of journalistic work, their compatibility with international human rights standards, as well as media freedoms and laws governing armed conflicts.

Ms. Al-Ghussain explained the media legislation concerning the Palestinian media, its publications and journalist's rights, as well as the penal code and its amendments.

Ms. Al-Ghussin referred to the digital crime law in the light of media freedom, the case of blocking websites, explaining the legal culture of Palestinian journalists, and how to obtain permission to photograph, publish and record telephone or video calls.

Ms. Al-Ghussain noted the crime of insult, defamation and its relation to journalistic work, and the right to reply and correct information, in order to avoid the journalist's legal problems.
