On Saturday, September 5, 2020, sponsored by Press House, Social Media Club-Palestine concluded an initiative on the topic of "Public Asks", which aims to reduce domestic violence under the Corona pandemic.
Mr. Mahmoud Al-Taweel, coordinator of Social Media Club, referring to the reasons that prompted the Social Media Club to organize such initiative, explaining the increase in cases of violence in Palestine and publish it through Social media platforms, as the club launched a hashtag named initiative aims to participate the public in the three meetings included in the initiative.
Mr. Al Taweel explained that the three meetings was moderated by Ms. Rawan Ghiada, where the first meeting was held on Sunday, August 23, 2020, and on the topic of" increasing incidence of domestic violence in Palestine - causes, motives and solutions", and was hosted by psychologist Ms.Alia Abu Mariam.
The meeting discussed the implications of quarantine on domestic violence and the impact on children, families and women.
Ms. Abu Mariam confirmed that the economic situation further exacerbated domestic violence, while she provided psychological guidance in the means of psychological discharge in a positive way, and ways to enhance confidence among children and mothers, and some tips to reduce violence.
In the second meeting on Thursday, September 3, 2020, Mr. Mustafa Ibrahim, human rights activist, hosted via ZOOM application, due to the curfew in the Gaza Strip as a result of outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID 19).
Mr. Ibrahim talked about legislation on domestic violence and laws that ensure the protection of the family, stressing the existence of several mechanisms to deal with the violent person, including going and resorting to a private institution that takes care of his case and works to solve it by all legal methods.
The third and final meeting, which was also held via ZOOM application, was hosted by psychologist Olfat Al-Ma'aswabi, who is responsible for psychological and social interventions at MA'AN Development Center.
Ms. Al-Ma'aswabi spoke about the indicators of domestic violence in Palestine, how institutions deal with these situations and solve the problems caused by violence.
It is worth mentioning that this initiative is part of the activities of the as part of Strengthening Free & Independent Media in Palestine project activities.
