Gaza, 08/12/2016--- Press House-Palestine a workshop about ' Freedom of expression and Human Rights" On the occasion of the international day of human rights.
The meeting was led by Saber Al-Nerab, Human Right Officer in OHCHR, and the lawyer Baker Al-Turkman, the Coordinator of Inquiries and complaints unit in the ICHR(), in the presence of a pile of journalists of both gender and students of Palestinian universities in Gaza.
In his Speech, Al-Nerab stressed that journalists must be aware of the legal articles concerning his work, and talked about the laws in the Palestinian territory as well.
Al-Nerab said; " The reason of the Palestinian crisis lies on the human rights, where we cannot talk about the occupation and siege without mentioning them. He asserted that the professional and objective aspects of Palestinian journalists must be enlarged.
He confirmed that journalism has two edges, adding " It's one of these two things; inciting violence, grudge, and division or enhancing peace and security in the society", noting that freedom of expression is away from inciting media to spread grudge.
Al-Nerab assured that the societies are in need for impartial journalism that stands for the marginalized and vulnerable.
Al-Nerab recommended on the importance of the independency of media outlets and its standards, professionalism of it.
Discussion with the guests and attendees was included, where they shared their experiences and some issues concerning media work in accordance of laws.
In his turn, Al-Turkman talked about some journalistic samples that faced legal problems, explaining some Palestinian laws concerning media work.
He stressed that journalists mustn't be directly accused of anything without clear evidences, since anything needs to be proved in cooperation with Judicial authority, asserting that the journalists must be accurate in delivering news.
Al-Turkman noted that there's an importance of promoting media freedoms in a way that fits the Palestinian laws.
He recommended that journalist syndicate must be established as soon as possible to represent journalists and help them during work.
He also pointed out that the laws concerning journalism must be collected, where media outlets have to be legally enabled.
He also said that enhancing the journalists' commitment of ethics of journalism and involving the civil and media organization in laws are also necessities.
