A Discussion Session Between Journalists and Law Figures About The Higher Council Law For Media

Gaza, 1/3/2016 --- Law experts and some journalists held a discussion session to talk about establishing the higher council for media, sponsored and funded by Press House- Palestine, within Media Initiatives Support Program.

The meeting led by Dr.Khaled Al-Qeeq, was attended by selected group of law figures and journalists; Dr. Ahmed Hammad, a lecturer at Al-Aqsa university- Dr. Anwar Al-Shaer& Dr.Jawad Al-Dalou, lecturers at the Islamic University- Ahmed Adwan, media department of the ministry of Foreign Affair- Dr.Talal Okal & Dr-Ahmed Yousef, Wisdom House Organization- the journalist Akram Atallah- the two journalists Hanan Al-Masry &shereen Khalifa- the journalist Shams Shonaaa- the journalists Saleh Abu Al-Shabab& Hani Habib& Seif Al-Deen Shaheen& Dr. Abbdel Qader Jarada- the lawyer Hamada Mukheimar- Dr.Zuhair Abed- the lawyer Ali Al-Din- Dr. Musa Abu Malloh, Palestine University- Nabil Al-Tahrawy and Ziad Al-Najjar.

The Palestinian Cabinet approved establishing the higher council for media law within a seesion held by the end of 2015, and it was assigned to the president Mamoud Abbas to be duly authorized.

Whereas this law has been rejected by a critical number of law people and journalists in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, hence it has been temporarily ceased.

The discussants confirmed the importance of forming a national committee, titled" Law and Media Legislations" to formulate laws related to media field in cooperation with media and law experts.

The Political Division was also discussed as it highly affect issuing the law, where all recommended that all laws must be united. The attendees discussed together the articles written on the law draft in law and media terms, where some objected on the weakness and repetition of some articles, which restrict media work.

The discussants said that forming any law must come in accordance with the needs of the society and journalists, who only can say if they need the higher council law or not.

The session came up with essential recommendations, that would be submitted to the Cabinet, and published next day.
