On Tuesday, January 19, 2021, Press House – Palestine (BAS) organized a dialogue session on the topic of “Enhancing Respect of Human Rights Among Palestinian Community Members & Decision Makers”, this session within "Journalists Have Power" project activities, funded by the Government of Canada.
With consideration of high preventive measures in the light of COVID-19, Dr. Abd Al-Qader Jarada, Head of the Arabian Center for the Forensic Sciences, lawyer Abdullah Sharshra, coordinator of the Legal Protection Unit for Journalists at Press House, and Ms. Hanadi Olwan, coordinator of "Journalists have Power" project, also, a group of journalists, media professionals and graduates, and lawyers’ participated in the session.
Ms. Hanadi Olwan, opened the meeting noting that this session is part of promoting human rights respect among community members and decision makers, also to raise the legal awareness of media professional’s (men and women).
Dr. Abd Al-Qader Jarada, said “The coming stage is considered a new phase and youth should have an important role in it, in light of the positive indications about conducting the legislative and presidential elections as well as a national council in Palestine”.
Mr. Jarada added, “it is very necessary for Palestinians to be aware about their rights and duties and to keep themselves updated in the laws and legislation, stressing the need for the journalists to be introduced to the basics of laws and legislations which prevent them getting into problems that hindering their journalistic work”.
From his part Mr. Abdullah Sharshara, stated that journalists (men and women) are considered within the most groups who exposed to human rights violations, and Empowering them by raising their legal and human rights awareness, and reviewing some of the laws that controlling and affecting media field and canceling other rules, thus would enhance the reality of journalists rights (men and women) and increase their protection levels in Palestine.
The participants in the session came up with a number of recommendations, most notably the need to amend the laws related journalists (men and women) in the Palestinian Constitution, as well as, emphasizing on youth role in democratic process through the law.
