The Press House - Palestine held four awareness workshops for media students at Palestine and Al-Aqsa Universities, and two workshops at the University College, one for male students and the other for female students in Gaza, on promoting the independent youth media discourse within the project Towards an Independent Media Platform for Capacity building, Awareness, and Involvement of Journalists”, in which the lawyer Kanaan Al-Sourani lectured.
The Lawyer Kanaan Al-Sourani spoke at the workshops about the importance of the existence of the awareness among media students and journalists about freedom of expression and freedom of opinion and to know the main difference between the two terms, in order to understand how it is expressed in legal ways and means, and so that the journalist can deliver the voice of the society professionally and within the laws in force in the state.
Al-Sourani also stressed that media students and journalists should be informed about the basic laws in Palestine, such as the Palestinian Basic Law, the Print and Publications law, as well as some international laws regarding the Geneva Convention, pointing out the need for journalists to be aware of the laws that allow him to obtain information legally and permissible and when he can Disclose its own special sources.
He also warned of the importance of keeping abreast of the global technological development with regard to digital laws that journalists in Palestine can benefit from, as the Palestinian environment lacks electronic laws that protect citizens and journalists. In addition to the need to put pressure for the development of laws dealing with electronic and legal protection.
The student's lawyer noted the need to move away from racial discrimination and bias towards political parties in order to convey the full truth and deliver the suffering of the community members in a professional and transparent manner without the specific goals of fame or money only.
In the meantime, there were intense discussions among media students and Al-Sourani about the extent of the freedom of expression presence in the Palestinian community, in light of the security tightening on social media g sites in the West Bank and Gaza, in addition to some inquiries about how to deal with Palestinian laws such as the law of cybercrimes law during the preparation of press materials.
