Gaza – Press House

On Wednesday, April 7, 2021, Press House concluded a training course on the topic of “Media Monitoring on the Palestinian Elections” as part of “Journalists Have Power” project activities funded by the Government of Canada.

With consideration of high prevention measures to prevent the outbreak of COVID19, the training course lasted for five days targeting a group of journalists (women and men) and media graduates in the Gaza strip.

Mr. Mohammed Zayed, lawyer and the trainer of the course, reviewed media freedoms during the Palestinian Elections, electoral laws governing the journalistic work, and the legal culture for journalists during the upcoming Palestinian Elections. He also touched on the electoral system, the general media freedoms principles, the journalist’s rights and responsibilities during the elections, and the professional monitoring mechanism on the elections.

From her part, Ms. Hedaya Shamoun, researcher and journalist, reviewed the role of journalists (women and men) in monitoring the electoral process, the important role of media in the process of monitoring, and the rights and responsibilities of the Election Agent and Observer.

In addition, Ms. Shamoun gave the participants some instructions to protect their rights and ensure their integrity while covering the elections and explained the standards of electoral coverage and digital monitoring on the elections using social media.

At the end of the training course, the participants got their certificates. This course aims to build journalists’ capacity in the field of media monitoring on the Palestinian Elections and improve their recognition of media monitoring principles, their rights, and responsibilities during elections.
