On Thursday, October 22, 2020, in collaboration with Media Center at Al-Najah University, Press House – Palestine (BAS) organized a meeting dialogue with Palestinian government spokesman Dr. Ibrahim Melhem on the topic of "Media Freedom in Palestine and the challenges it faces ”, as part of Strengthening Free & Independent Media in Palestine Project activities.
The meeting was held at Press House – Palestine via "ZOOM" application, in the presence of journalists, and writers.
Participants in the meeting reviewed the problems and challenges facing journalistic work and restricted media freedoms. Dr. Melhem answered the questions of the participants and reviewed the government's steps in promoting media freedoms and its efforts to regulate journalistic work.
During the meeting, Dr. Melhem stressed that the government of Prime Minister Dr. Mohammed Ashtiya is working to create an environment that attracts media freedom based on dealing with transparency and credibility.
"We call for a free media that leans on the pillars to provide knowledge and dialogue, and other opinions," Dr.Melhem said, noting that "a free media and an independent media teach people the language of dialogue and respect other opinions."
Dr. Melhem added that the Ministry of Information is drafting laws with the pace of evolving situation, and in the future we will be in a new state of laws," adding: "We are keen on the right of people to know and the right of the media to investigate and advertise, but by the rules of the media profession."
