On Tuesday, August 11, 2020, Press House – Palestine (BAS) organized a workshop on the topic of "Women's Rights and Gender Equality" as part of Strengthening Free & Independent Media in Palestine Project ‎activities.

The facilitator of the workshop was Ms. Fatma Ashour (Lawyer and activists in the field of women empowerment) in a presence of a group of journalists and graduates of media faculties in Palestinian universities.

Ms. Ashour referred to the term "the right", as generally defined by jurists, which is "a legitimate interest protected and regulated by law,” explaining that the whole life is based on the theory of the right”.

Ms. Ashour added that it is the right that precedes the law, as it came to regulate and control the right, noting that the law has recently established or took away a right such as the " Act on Child Custody", which may be guaranteed to the wife or husband or to take away from one of them in accordance with the case.

Ms. Ashour explained that the issue of the peace committees, which have become the talk of the people recently against the background of the murders in the Gaza Strip, is one of the biggest causes of injustice for women and the denial of their rights.

By talking about the role and influence of women's institutions in this area, Ms. Ashour pointed out that the question must be the opposite, in the absence of these institutions, the issue will be more complex and tragic, stressing that the issue of defending women is not only a women's issue, but the responsibility of an entire society.

Ms. Ashour concluded by calling on the media to look at the issues with impartiality, not a male view in addition to returning all cases to their legal reference, and to dissociate themselves from the beliefs and analyses affected by the view of society and beliefs that may cause a real disaster for women.

The workshop included many questions and inquiries that focused on the importance of equality between women and men, the most important laws that included this right, in addition to the role of the media in clarifying this issue and conveying it to the public and defending the rights of women guaranteed by international laws.
