Press House holds a training course in investigative journalism

On August 15, 2018, Press House-Palestine held a training course on investigative journalism targeting 15 trainees from journalists and it lasted for five days.

Isabelle Ducret, Swiss journalist, a correspondent for RTS radio and television and winner of a number of international awards, presented the course.

On the first day, Ducret introduced the trainees, reviewed her journalistic experiences in the investigative work, listened to the trainees' ideas on the issues they wanted to investigate, and she spoke about the definition of journalism and the difference between it and the investigative journalism.

The second day was about the sources of information and the mechanism of protection it as well as mentioning some examples of information sources that are not true. Trainees were divided into three working groups to prepare three investigative surveys on important issues were agreed on during the training.

During the third day, Ducret discussed the interviews, its preparation and strategies. She also covered the issues of information manipulation, reviewed a number of archived investigations. On the practical side, the trainer discussed with the trainees about their investigations giving them the appropriate guidance.

On the fourth day, the trainers held press interviews and conducted field visits for their investigations. The trainer followed up the achievements of the trainees and continued to talk about the sources of information and about what makes good interviews.

On the fifth day, the trainees discussed the investigations they had prepared and talked about the results of these investigations. On her turn, the trainer thanked the students for their efforts and their good attempts to reach the information, showed them the most important things to follow and noted out the most important things to avoid during work.

At the end of the course, certificates were distributed to the trainees in the presence of the chairman of the Press House, Belal Jadallah, who praised the efforts of the journalist Ducret, which she offered the trainees during this course.

The course included the preparation of three outputs: three investigative surveys on the "residues of antibiotics in meat", "specifications of the goods that enter through Karem Abu Salem crossing", and "generators in densely populated areas".

The course is part of the "Capacity Building" program, which is part of "Promoting freedom of expression, quality and independence of the Palestinian media" project, which is funded by the Norwegian and Swiss governments.
