Violations against Media Freedoms in Palestine

The Legal Protection Unit for Journalists at Press House - Palestine (BAS) has published a factsheet on the violations against media freedoms in Palestine during 2022.

The factsheet highlighted violations committed against Palestinian journalists whether by the Israeli Occupation, or Internal Palestinian entities, in addition to digital rights violations. The number of committed violations during 2022 against media freedoms in Palestine reached (1406), the Legal Protection Unit at Press House has documented (939) violations committed by Israeli Occupation representing (66.8%) out of total violations, (81) internal violations representing (5.7%) and (386) digital rights violations representing (27.5%).

The distribution of violations by geographical area indicates that most of the committed violations by the Israeli Occupation were in the West Bank, reaching (923) violations, the most important of these violations was the killing of two journalists; Shirin Abu Akla and Ghofran Wrasna, while (81) internal violations were committed, including (25) violations in Gaza Strip, and (56) violation in the West Bank.

As for the digital rights violations, (368) digital rights violations were documented, most of them were caused by the "Meta" company, which includes the Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp platforms.

In comparison to 2021, the violations against media freedoms in Palestine reached (884) violations, the unit monitored (638) violations committed by the Israeli occupation, which represented (72%) of the total violations, and (92) internal violations, which is (10%) of the total violations, as for the digital rights violations, (154) violations were monitored, which represented (18%) of the total violations.

In 2021, the Legal Protection Unit indicated that the distribution of violations by geographical area reached (665) violations occurred in the West Bank, accounting for (75%) of the total violations, and (219) violations in the Gaza Strip, which represented (25%),
