on Monday, April 18, 2022, Press House –Palestine held a dialogue session on the topic of " The importance of journalistic ethics in preventing hate speech” as part of "Legal Protection for Palestinian Journalists" project activities, in partnership with the European Endowment for Democracy.

The dialogue session was held in Gaza City, with participation of Mr. Tawfiq Abu Shomar and in presence of a number of journalists (women and men), students and graduates of media colleges.

The dialogue session was opened by Mr. Abdullah Sharsharah "Coordinator of the Legal Protection Unit for Journalists" at Press House, stressing the Press House's desire to strengthen and build the capacity of journalists in various legal fields related to their profession, pointing out that the values and ethics of the profession of journalism contribute significantly to the reduction of hate speech if journalists comply to them, and emphasizing that these standards are not separate from the legal context governing the profession of journalism, but are related to.

 

From his part, Mr. Tawfiq Abu Shomer spoke about the fact that the Palestinian Journalism is a message before it is a profession, and that the commitment to the ethics of the profession of journalism is very important in terms of its impact on the Palestinian citizen, raising their awareness and its contribution to the of society. He also added that it is the duty of the journalist to adhere to professional and ethical standards because the work of the journalist may have a significant social, political and economic impact, and may not be without consequences.
 

The dialogue session included a number of participations from the participants, emphasizing the necessity to modify Palestinian legislation as well as increased efforts by civic society and the Journalists to emphasize the profession's values and ethics.
