Press House organizes a discussion session on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day

On Monday, May 3, 2021, Press House – Palestine (BAS) organized a discussion session on the topic of “Palestinian Journalists and Media Freedom” on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day as part of “Journalists Have Power” project activities funded by the Government of Canada.

With high prevention measures to prevent the outbreak of COVID19, Ms. Rula Elian, Journalist, Mr. Abdullah Sharshra, Coordinator of the Legal Protection Unit for Journalists at Press House, and, Ms. Hanadi Olwan, Project Coordinator, Journalists (women and men) and media graduates participated in the discussion session held at Press House.

Ms. Hanadi Olwan opened the session pointing out that today the world is commemorating the World Press Freedom Day to emphasize the media freedoms and the necessity of protecting journalists (women and men.)

From his part, Mr. Abdullah Sharshara talked about the reality of media freedoms in the first quarter of 2021 reviewing the factsheet of the violations committed against the Palestinian Journalists by Israeli occupation and internal entities in addition to Digital rights violations.

Ms. Rula Elian said, “there are many problems restricting the work of media in Palestine specifically during the spread of COVID19 and its consequences such as emergency case and others.”

Elian also pointed out that Palestinian electronic content is being fought by the management of social media platforms where the latest reports showed that 64 Journalists’ accounts were blocked because of a published content without receiving explanations about the reasons of that blocking.
