Press House organizes four training sessions in Rafah on the Legal Protection Manual for Journalists

Gaza – Press House

In April 2021, Press House – Palestine (BAS) organized four training sessions on “Legal Protection Manual for Journalists” in Rafah in the southern Gaza strip to raise the legal awareness level for journalists (women and men) as part of “Strengthening Free & Independent Media in Palestine” project activities funded by the Norwegian and the Swiss Governments.

With consideration of high prevention measures to prevent the outbreak of COVID19, the training sessions were held in Rafah on April 11&12,2021 targeting a number of journalists and volunteers (women and men) working at media institutions.

During the training sessions, Mr. Abdullah Sharshara, coordinator of the Legal Protection Unit for Journalists at Press House, reviewed the aspects of the training sessions which briefed the Legal Protection Manual for Journalists issued by Press House and the legal framework regulating the journalistic work.

In addition, Mr. Sharshara focused on the most important problems Journalists face during their work, such as recording and photography issues and journalist’s rights in front of law enforcement.

Also, the training sessions touched on the available legal protection for journalists during the armed conflicts, procedures of documenting violations on media freedoms, legal restrictions on preparing journalistic materials, the right to respond, and maintaining the sources confidentiality.

It's noteworthy that the Legal Protection Manual for Journalists issued by Press House aims to raise the legal awareness level for journalists (women and men) theoretically and practically by providing them with legal knowledge in the Palestinian law and the international standards related to media freedoms in addition to facilitate legal procedures for journalists when they are exposed to any kind of violations. This manual targets media professionals in their different job positions.

The selection of the legal manual topics was based on the analysis conducted by the Legal Protection Unit focusing on the most prominent problems the Palestinian journalists have faced from 2017to 2020 in addition to the journalists’ legal advice requests at the Legal Unit from 2020 to 2021.
