The Press House Hosts a dialogue meeting on the Student Council Elections

On Tuesday afternoon, the Press House hosted a dialogue meeting for various students frames leaders entitled “The Student Council Elections .. is a Necessity or a Disruption?”, at the initiative of the Palestinian progressive youth union and Handala cultural Salon.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Hossam Abu Sitta ,who ran the meeting, besides the participation of the representative of Fateh youth movement, Rami Shehadeh, the official in charge of universities dossier at the Islamic Block of Hamas movement, Muhammad Firwana, and the Coordinator of the Student Frames Secretariat of the Popular Front, Ahmad Al-Qiq, in addition to the attendance of a number of graduated students from the Palestinian universities.

The meeting was opened by Dr. Hossam Abu Sitta, stressing that university students have common rights regardless of their politica and partisan tendencies, and the necessity to shed light upon the student’s issues and the holding of student elections as soon as possible.

From his part, the representative of youth movement Rami Shehadeh, stressed the clear attitude of the movement in Gaza and the West Bank towards the student council elections, citing the recent elections held in Birzeit University.

Shehadeh said: "We strive to hold the elections with integrity, transparency and democracy and renew our  acceptance of this elections," stressing that youth movement need to practice its work conveniently at the universities of the Gaza Strip.

While the official in charge of universities dossier at the Islamic Block Muhammad Firwana explained that :” The students interest are on the top of everything , and the problem lies in the lack of patience in to hold the elections," stressing the need to complete the journey they started despite the obstacles.

He also called on to overcome the intellectual and structured talk and to start to solve the problems, rather than the inertia of the student frames towards holding the elections.

The Coordinator of the Student Frames Secretariat of the Popular Front Ahmad Al-Qiq said that:“The Students are anxious to experience democratic elections and dream about it. As Holding elections is important for the student because it is their lifeline".

Al-Qiq pointed out the importance of the freedom of labour union and the freedom of expression and said, "We want a national movement engaged with the occupation to work for the student’s rights and the national issues”.

At the end of the meeting, a discussion was opened between the attendees and the speakers, which concluded that student elections should be held in the Palestinian universities in the Gaza Strip, as happens in West Bank universities.
