Media Empowerment for People with Disabilities to Claim Their Rights

 

On July 9, Press House- Palestine held a training course about "Media Empowerment for People with Disabilities to Claim Their Rights" targeting 15 trainees with disabilities from both genders.

The four-day training course was lectured by activist Haneen Sammak and journalist Majida Al-Bilbisi.

On the first day, they discussed the definition of the communication process and the most important factors affecting communication and connection. They also referred to the types of messages, forms of the communication process and the importance of communication for people with disabilities.

The second day focused on identifying international, regional and national resolutions, declarations and laws. Moreover, talking about the shadow report of people with disabilities, as well as identifying the frameworks and the criteria for disability.

The third day tackled some common mistakes and concepts about people with disabilities and the ways that can be used to highlight their issues. In addition, to applying practical means used in media to cover disability.

On the fourth day, the course discussed mobilizing and lobbying the issues of people with disabilities, identifying advocacy concepts and the media advocacy plan.

This course is part of the Capacity Building Program, which aims to build the abilities of journalists and media professionals, as part of the project's activities to enhance freedom of expression, quality and independence of Palestinian media that is funded by the Norwegian and Swiss governments.
